Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy programmes address the thinking and reasoning processes that result in impulsive behaviour. CBT programmes help individuals to develop new ways of thinking and reacting to problems and situations. They are particularly effective in helping drug misuses and former drug misusers to reduce or end their dependency, avoid relapse and cope with difficult social situations.

Many of the sessions involve situation and role play to help participants implement and practice the skills required to remain drug and crime free, including problem solving and decision making, managing cravings and identifying high risk situations.

Phoenix Futures runs the following types of CBT programmes:

• PASRO: Prisoners Addressing Substance Related Offending - a 20 session programme delivered over a four to five week period. This programme is delivered at HMP Highpoint and HMP Ranby.

• SDP: Short Duration Programme – 20 x 2.5 hour morning sessions over four weeks for Prisoners who are on remand or with less than six months left to serve of their sentence, who have a history of substance dependence. This course is delivered at HMP Nottingham, HMP Holme House and HMP Styal.

• AIS: Alcohol Intervention Service - this is a flexible and cost effective service run specifically for people in custody who have experienced alcohol-related problems. This innovative service has been developed and designed by Phoenix Futures to address the gap in alcohol treatment provision for offenders. This pilot service is being delivered at HMP Blundeston, HMP Brixton, HMP Foston Hall, YOI/RC Glen Parva, HMP Hollesley Bay, HMP Holloway, HMP Lincoln, HMP North Sea Camp, HMP Nottingham, HMP Onley, HMP Pentonville, HMP Ranby, HMP Sudbury, and HMP Wandsworth.

• ARV: Alcohol Related Violence - this progamme is delivered at HMP Acklington and HMP Highpoint.

• STAR: Steps To Achieving Recovery - this programme is delivered at HMP Stocken.
