Hampshire Brief Intervention Alcohol Service
Who is our service for?
It is solely aimed at non-dependent drinkers whose alcohol use has become hazardous or harmful to their health. Therefore we are unable to take on referrals classed as dependant drinkers for this
particular service.
What is hazardous of harmful drinking?
Hazardous drinking:
Is a level of alcohol consumption or a pattern of drinking which carries a risk of harmful consequences for the drinker or others.
Men drinking at hazardous levels will consume 22-50 units per week.
Harmful drinking:
Is a pattern of drinking that causes damage to health, either physical or mental.
A diagnosis of harmful drinking means that harm has already been caused by alcohol use.
Men drinking at harmful levels will consume over 50 units per week and women will consume over 35 units per week.
How does the service work?
The brief interventions provided by the service consist of structured conversations which motivate and support a client in thinking about and/or planning behaviour change. An emphasis is placed on building confidence, taking responsibility, providing information/ advice and setting goals for reducing alcohol intake.
Who can refer to the service?
Referrals are accepted from various sources. These include:
GPs, Nurses, Midwives, Health visitors and Hospital staff
Police staff, Probation officers, Magistrate's Courts
Housing Associations, Support agencies
Self referral by client

The service covers:
Gosport
Fareham
Havant
Winchester

What happens next?
The service will make contact with the client and arrange a convenient appointment time for initial screening and assessment
