Partick Thistle FC and Phoenix Futures working together to provide work experience opportunities
James Douglas, a service user at our Glasgow Re-Settlement Move-on Service has become the first graduate of a scheme run by Partick Thistle Football Club to help people recovering from drug misuse.
He has completed three months as a voluntary worker in the handy-person project at Firhill Football Club. The project offers volunteers the chance to improve skills and employment opportunities through work experience. James was praised by a crowd of well-wishers when he received his certificate as the first graduate of the programme. Scottish National Party MSP Bob Doris praised the scheme saying, "To have two local organisations as diverse as Partick Thistle and Phoenix Futures working together is fantastic."
Kieron Dempsey, director of the PTFC community engagement scheme added, "Our programme is re-invigorating the club and its support base whilst providing valuable support to vulnerable groups. Phoenix Futures is a fantastic rehab project and we are delighted to have this partnership".
James commented, "It's great to have had the opportunity to work here and we have had a good laugh sometimes. It's not been easy but it is good to be here today to receive my certificate". James is hoping to stay on with the club after the programme finishes and hopes that there might be a job for him at the end.

Kelly is employee of the month at HMP Acklington
Congratulations to Kelly Errington, our Treatment Manager of the Substance Misuse Group Programme Team at HMP Acklington on receiving the Prison's Employee of the Month award for March 2010.Kelly (pictured in the front row, on the right, with the rest of the team at the last STOP graduation) was nominated for this award by both Team Members and Prison Governors. Acting Prison Governor, Neil Evans, chose the overall winner of this award (from 500 members of staff) and he agreed that Kelly is an excellent Treatment Manager, supporting both prisoners who attend our programmes and the staff team. Kelly proved her skills earlier this year when the STOP team achieved an "Exceeded" on their annual audit.
Partnership working at nature park to benefit Wishaw
Phoenix Futures groups have been working at Greenhead Moss Community Nature Park in Wishaw doing a variety of conservation tasks within the nature reserve. Under the leadership and encouragement of John Deeney, our service users are encouraged and motivated to understand what they, as a communitygroup, are trying to achieve.
John not only encourages participation but also helps our service users rediscover skills and enthusiasms that they have perhaps forgotten they had. The benefits to the health and mental well-being of volunteers working outdoors are well documented and this certainly applies to our service user group. Although some of the work may seem hard, they persevere and really feel the benefit of the day on site.
We look forward to continuing this successful partnership and warmly acknowledge the input of all partners in this project.

Correction to our calendar
In the Phoenix Futures 2010 calendar, the figures quoted in the month of September were erroneous. The figures relating to the Enhanced Addiction Casework Service (EACS) were reported from the End User Questionnaires, which were completed by 170 service users during the period January – June 2009, in six of the thirteen public sector prisons in Scotland. These figures represent service user views and were the main data source available to Phoenix Futures at the time of printing.
Celebrating our Successes
We believe effective partnerships can really help us deliver high quality services and we are fortunate enough to work with a range of other voluntary organisations, local health authorities and local councils to do this.
The successful partnership working between our Wirral Town Centre Outreach Service and the YMCA was recognised and celebrated at our recent awards ceremony where they were joint winners of The Partnership award.
