Phoenix Welcomes Piloting of Women's Residential Centres
Our experience as a provider for thousands of women with complex needs in custodial and community settings, as well as a pioneering Therapeutic Community residential services provider, we welcome the proposed piloting of women’s centres within MOJ's new Female Offender Strategy.
Furthermore as provider of women-only residential service Grace House, which provides for women with mental health and substance misuse needs, we have first-hand experience of providing holistic support to women with a level and complexity of need that is extremely difficult to meet in a community setting. We have shown that meeting these needs in a therapeutic residential setting with links to the wider community provides both a preventative measure to avoid women becoming involved in the criminal justice system, and effectively reduces offending behaviour, by addressing the underlying causes of offending.
We support the strategy’s recommendations that in addition to effective treatment, stable accommodation, employment and training opportunities are essential to aid long term behaviour change.
