Criminal Justice Support Service

HMP Styal Family Service

Location: Styal

Phoenix Futures Family Service offer support to both the residents and their families. Within our service there are two strands of provision both of which aim to support, help maintain and build relationships and bonds between the residents and their family members and loved ones.

Services Offered/Interventions:

  • The first strand of provision is based within the visitors’ centre and the visits hall. The visitors’ centre is where we welcome and book the visitors in, check ID and process property intended for the residents. We have a Tea-bar that offers tea, coffee and snacks as well as a playroom for the children. We aim to create a pleasant and warm environment and are there for any practical or emotional support that might be needed. After the visitors have all gained access, the team will go over to the visit's hall and staff the play area and Tea-bar. We engage in free play or activities with the children during visits.
  • The other strand of the team is based inside the prison. Here we offer support to the residents who have children in care or other family issues that they might need help with. We liaise with all relevant departments within and out of the prison i.e. social workers and solicitors. We facilitate calls, meetings and visits where restrictions are in place, as well as final visits before adoptions.

Family Days are held twelve times a year hosted by Phoenix Futures. These are longer than normal visits and there is a buffet, drinks, games, crafts, face painting and music. Family days are a social interaction and Residents are not restricted to their seats. In the warmer months we move onto the field where we set up activities such as a bouncy castle and other outdoor games. The residents show great appreciation and treasure this quality time and fun with their families and loved ones.
