Phoenix Future's new B-Chilled harm reduction service has launched in Barnsley with a fresh look, a new team and a different approach specific to the needs of Barnsley’s night time economy.

To mark the launch of the project on Friday 21st August, the outreach team went out on the town in Barnsley to help individuals have a safe night, learn about the risks of drink, drugs and unsafe sex, and find out who to turn to for support in the morning.

Fresh from their launch night success, the team joined revellers in the sunshine at the Barnsley Gay Pride at Mandela Gardens on Sunday 6th September. The B-Chilled team were on hand to answer questions, provide personal safety and harm reduction information. B-Chilled has formed a strong partnership with the LGBT Forum and has facilitated joint stalls within Barnsley's gay scene on a Tuesday evening.

As well as providing expert advice, guidance and information, the project also offers training to local organisations on harm minimisation and provides opportunities to volunteers from the local community and from a diverse range of backgrounds. All volunteers are trained to a minimum of gateway level 2 in Harm Reduction.

With a proactive approach to health promotion, the team provide support in a number of ways:

Town Centre - in a busy town centre location, the team talk to people and offer take-away information on personal safety, sexual health, drug and alcohol harm reduction and, if necessary, referrals to other health organisations.

Venue Interventions – providing information stalls at venues to help people access the information, support and advice they may need whilst clubbing.

Health Fairs – providing information stalls at community events and universities/ colleges.

Festival/ Event Work – the team will create 'Chill-Out Spaces' offering welfare services to people at events, along with personal safety, sexual health and recreational drug and alcohol information, advice and support.

I hope you will join us in welcoming the team. We look forward to hearing more about their work very soon!
